Isabel Omara Espichicoque Anders

Isabel Anders is a German/Cuban pianist, composer, and improviser based in Berlin. Her intention with improvisation is to conduct a musical dialogue with the other performers, and to let ideas and inspiration from various sources and art forms merge in a non-elitist manner into a timeless form of expression. She began her piano studies in a russian music school at age 6. She continued her education, studying with the pianists Prodromos Symeonidis and Vladimir Tropp, eventually leading her to the decision to focus on her own composition and improvisation, rather than aspiring to become a classical pianist. This decision led her to explore a wide variety of art forms, and to further her studies, taking classes with Sascha Dragićević and Stefan Streich, focusing on composition and contemporary music. The first released album was based on a book of poems “Les Fleurs du Mal” written by Charles Baudelaire, after which several pieces for strings, percussion and piano were composed.

Since 2022 she took over the artistic direction of the Kühlspot Social Club e.V. Berlin. In October 2024 she initiated the “Piano Duo Festival for improvised and experimental music”, which is now intended to establish as an annual festival in Berlin.

8Y7 - Isabel Anders & Lázara Rosell Albear feat. George Espichicoque With the duo titled „8Y7″, formed by the half-Cuban artists Lázara Rosell Albear (drums) and Isabel Anders (piano), they aim to merge traditional Cuban rhythms with composition and free improvisation, developing and reinterpreting them. The project is inspired by the Afro-American Yoruba mythology, which includes theatrical performances featuring specific instruments, drumbeats, chants, and dance steps. The Cuban percussionist George Espichicoque worked extensively in theater, with a particular focus on folklore. He presented several projects on Afro-Cuban folklore, including at the House of World Cultures and the House of Global Workshops. Furthermore, he was involved in the first Capoeira Academy, where he taught various genres such as Rumba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Son Cubano, Salsa… Together they are bringing the rich tradition of Afro-Cuban culture to the stage in new forms for the first time as a trio.
